Feb 2014 Program:
What Is Your Hobby & What Is Your ‘Other’ Hobby
Presented By: Membership
Come join us for a blast from the past as the Del Air Rockhounds Club will be screening a segment from the old reality TV program “What is your Hobby” that showcased our very own club. This segment runs about 15-17 minutes and will be followed by our membership presenting their “Other Hobbies”. We all have other interests and collections that may not be rock related but are certainly worth showing off and telling other members about. So dust off that “other” collection you have and bring it in to share will all.

For Feb 2014, Club Member Dennis Miller Asks:
What are Dendrites?
Find out more at our February meeting and please remember to bring any dendrite specimens you may have and share with the group. There will be a color handout for those of you that have been collecting these info sheets over the past few years.

CFMS Thulite Collecting Trip 2014
WHEN: Saturday February 22nd at 9:00 am
WHERE: Ludlow, CA. located right off Interstate 40 about 35 miles east of Barstow, California
MEET: at the hotel/restaurant parking lot in Ludlow south of I-40 for orientation and sign in.

WHAT TO BRING: Collecting bags/buckets, rock hammer, digging equipment, safety glasses and spray bottles. This is the heart of the Mojave Desert and the weather can be unpredictable at this time of year so dress accordingly. This trip may be canceled at the last minute due to bad weather, so please feel free to contact me the night before if weather is questionable.
We will be collecting Thulite that has a nice pink color and works well for Spheres, Carvings and slabs. From the meeting spot we will caravan East to for about 20 minutes to collecting site and low clearance vehicles are not advised. Bring lunch, plenty of water and a camera. This widespread field offers no shade. Gas and food is available in Ludlow. Waiver of liability will be signed at the meeting spot. While the roads are basically traversable in most high clearance sedans, high clearance trucks and SUVs are highly recommended. Other materials at this site may include agates and jaspers, nearby is Pisgah Crater, a young volcano with an extensive lava field and we may stop there as well for some Lavic Jasper. If you would like to stay for the weekend this general area also offers the Southern Cady’s for a wide variety of material. Bring your rock collecting guides. For these other sites 4wd is recommended but high clearance mandatory. Stay-overs may camp at a number of undeveloped sites or at the hotel in Ludlow. Treat the desert with respect. Tread lightly and pack it in/pack it out.

WE NOW HAVE GRAB BAGS!
Del Air members Leilani Backus, Jim & Shellie VanWinkle, Julie Marin, Bob & Maxine Dearborn got together on Jan. 8th and all were busy putting grab bags together. With 3 sewing machines going and ironing, folding and turning them inside out we finished 250 bags.
Add these to the ones already done and the few that are already filled in storage, we now have about 550 grab bags ready to fill.
We will be filling as many of these grab bags as we can on Saturday February 8th from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Dearborn’s house.
In the past, with enough people helping out, we can get this done in 2 hours and then have a nice lunch before going home.
SO MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND COME OVER TO HELP FILL AT LEAST 400 GRAB BAGS. WE NEED YOU TO HELP!
