June 2017 Program: “Come See the New Dinos On the Block”
Come join us for an
interactive, hands on presentation of the programs our Outreach Team presents to
elementary schools throughout the San Fernando Valley area. We will have
dinosaurs, fossils, rocks and minerals and so much more. We will have a number
of the team’s educational games we play with the students where they can win a
free polished stone. All members and guests in attendance will get a chance to
play these games and learn how to operate them so volunteering in the future
won’t be so scary. And yes, everyone will get a polished stone to take home
because all rockhounds need a good pocket rock! Most have no idea
exactly what our Outreach Team actually does so make a point of attending this
meeting and see how fantastic our Outreach Team really is.

Exploring: Pinnacles
National Park
Born of Fire!
Some 23 million years ago multiple volcanoes erupted, flowed, and slid to
form what would become Pinnacles National Park. What remains is a unique
landscape. Travelers journey through chaparral, oak woodlands, and canyon
bottoms. Hikers enter rare talus caves and emerge to towering rock spires
teeming with life: prairie and peregrine falcons, golden eagles, and the
inspiring California condor.
Pinnacles National
Park is a U.S. National Park protecting a mountainous area located east of the
Salinas Valley in Central California, about 5 miles east of Soledad and 80
miles southeast of San Jose. People come to Pinnacles to hike, rock climb, watch
and study wildlife, view wildflowers, and experience nature. Pinnacles offers
solitude, challenge, and escape from the urban interface of both the San
Francisco and Monterey Bay areas.
Unlike many national parks, Pinnacles
is most popular in the cooler months. During the spring, when the grasses are
green and a variety of wildflowers can be seen along any trail, hiking is at
its best. Fall and winter are also excellent times to visit. During the summer,
extreme heat can make hiking uncomfortable at best, and possibly dangerous for
those who are unprepared.
Trails at Pinnacles National Park
have a very distinctive look, they are surrounded by Rhyolitic Breccia,
a unique rock that combines volcanic & sedimentary rock. The giant boulders
you see at Pinnacles today were formed as a result of volcanic activity that
occurred over 23 million years ago.
Since 1908, Pinnacles National
Monument increased in bits and pieces to its present size of about 26,000
acres. On January 10, 2013 President Barack Obama signed legislation passed by
Congress that re designated the monument as a National Park. Many visitors come
to hike, picnic, bird watch, rock climb, learn about geology and plants, see
wild animals or perhaps to simply enjoy the wilderness which offers peace and
quiet.
