Oct 2014 Program: Historic Oakridge Estate
          Presented by: Patricia LoPresti
Step back in time into the late 1930's. View a display of historic and current photos of the house built in Northridge for Barbara Stanwyck and the thoroughbred horse breeding ranch she owned with Zeppo Marx and Harry S. Hart. Enjoy a power point presentation detailing the efforts to rehabilitate the house, create a city park and preserve a historic treasure. You will be enthralled by the 6500 sq. ft. home with 4 fireplaces, 8 bathrooms, a pool, tennis court and 3 car garage built in 1937.

We will also be having our final Silent Auction of the year so bring your quarters and plenty of boxes and bags to bring home your winning treasures.                        Emmy Silverman-Program Chairwoman

This year, The Del Air Rockhounds have chosen “Operation Christmas Child”, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, as our holiday charity. We ask all members, friends and guests to “Pack a Shoebox” for an underprivileged child this Christmas. Here’s how it works:
1.      Use an empty cardboard or plastic shoebox (average size). You can wrap the box & lid separately, but wrapping is not required.
2.      Decide whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Pick-up a label from club member Emmy Silverman or download one from Use the appropriate boy/girl label. Mark the correct age category and tape the label to the top of your box.
3.      Fill with gifts. Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. See below for gift ideas.
4.      Help cover shipping and other costs related to delivering your shoeboxes to children overseas by donating $7 for each gift you prepare. You can write a check to Samaritan’s Purse (note “OCC” on the memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the items inside your shoebox. If you are preparing multiple gifts, please make one combined donation.
  1. Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and bring it to our general meeting on Thursday November 6, 2014 and club member Emmy Silverman will deliver them to Samaritan’s Purse for delivery to children around the world.

Gift Ideas:
  • Toys: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as dolls, toy cars, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc.
  • School Supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
  • Non-Liquid Hygiene Items: toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, washcloths, etc.
  • Accessories: t-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries), etc.
  • A Personal Note: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. If you include your name and address, the child may be able to write back.
Do Not Include: Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out-of-date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.

Granada Hills Street Fair: Sat October 11, 2014  10:00 am to 5:00 pm

The Del Air Club will have a 10 ft by 10 ft booth at this street fair and will be needing members to help out through out the day. Since this is an 8 hour event, we are asking for volunteers to take on a four hour shift. Bob Knox and Chris Ward will be there the entire day and are projecting we will need a minimum of 3 people to run the booth at any given time. We will have the Spin-a-Wheel, touch and feel table and an educational game for kids and adults alike plus grab bags. This will not be a huge moneymaker for the  club but it is a great opportunity to meet a lot of people, pass out our club fliers, talk about rocks and try to recruit new members. The fair will occupy Chatsworth Blvd for four city blocks between Zelzah Ave and Encino Ave. We will be setting up at 9 am and would like volunteers to work from 9 am to 1 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pm. This is very easy and whole lot of fun so see Bob Knox or Chris Ward at the October meeting and tell us you’re ready to sign up
