May 2019 Program                                              The Many Different Types of Cultured Pearls  Presented by: Renee Newman

Thanks to new and better methods of cultivating freshwater pearls, their size has been increasing, their quality has improved and their shapes have become more varied. They now compete with Tahitian and Australian cultured South Sea pearls in terms of beauty and size. Renée will explain why there are so many different types of cultured freshwater pearls now compared to twenty years ago and she will show examples of how designers are using cultured freshwater, Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian pearls to create unique pearl jewelry. Also, in her PowerPoint presentation are photos and information about:

* unbleached natural-color cultured Akoya pearls that are now being sold
* pearl imitations and how to detect them
* pearl treatments and how to detect some of them
* natural-color cultured “black pearls” from Tahiti and the Sea of Cortez
* natural pearls from oysters, mussels, abalone, clams, scallops and conch snails

Renée Newman became interested in pearls in the early 1980's while conducting tours to Tahiti, Australia, China, Hong Kong and Japan. Her passengers wanted to know how to judge the quality of the pearls and other gems they saw. In order to answer their questions, she enrolled in the GIA gemology program. After receiving a GIA graduate gemologist diploma, she was hired as a gemologist at a wholesale firm in downtown Los Angeles where she got hands-on experience with diamonds, pearls and colored gems. Realizing there was a need for books on how to judge gem quality, she decided to write a series of books to help people identify and evaluate gems. The first edition of her Pearl Buying Guide was published in 1992. A new Sixth edition was released in 2017.

Information about the book is available at www.reneenewman.com/pearl.htm. If you would like an autographed copy of the new Pearl Buying Guide or any of her other books, bring cash or a check. Her books will be available for sale before & after the meeting for a discounted price of $15 each including tax.   (Emmy Silverman-Program Director)

April 11, 12, 13 & 14 - Busy, Busy, Busy Times for the Del Air Rockhounds Club!

April 11th and 12th saw our Youth Outreach Education Team comprised of members Shellie VanWinkle, LaVere Schmidt, Dan Knox, Bernadette Friedman and Bob & Maxine Dearborn - talking to over 100 students both mornings. Well over 200 for both days. Then April 11th evening
we had a booth at a local school which was run by Ann Richardson, Shellie VanWinkle, Michael Tschacher, Bob & Maxine Dearborn and guest Debbie Branham. Here we saw 100’s of people and it ran until 8:00pm. Friday the 12th saw members Chris Ward and Bob Knox setting up our club display at the Conejo Show while other members, Dan Knox, LaVere Schmidt, Shellie VanWinkle, Bernadette Friedman, Bob & Maxine Dearborn ran another evening booth at another school festival until 8:30pm. Again talking to many, many people.April 13th and 14th Bob Knox and Chris Ward ran our volcano display and educational game at the Conejo Show. You can see we had many members really busy these four days at many locations. Yes, most were the same members, but the club really, really appreciates the help from all to make our events a real success.
As you all know these events help to support our Youth Outreach
Education Program and also support our club’s non-profit status. WE ALWAYS
NEED OUR MEMBERSHIP’S HELP ON THESE ACTIVITIES
Maxine Dearborn, chairperson, Education Outreach Team
