February 2019 Program
Channel Islands Pygmy Mammoth - Fossils Tell A Story
Presented by: Keri Dearborn
Over the past year and a half, Del Air Rockhounds member Keri Dearborn has been working with the Education Department of Channel Islands National Park on a project about the Channel Islands pygmy mammoth.

Standing only six-foot-tall at the shoulder, the pygmy mammoth is a unique local fossil species. Keri will share with us new information on how mammoths arrived on the islands, how geology impacted and transformed a giant species into an island dwarf, and the behind-the-scenes process of excavating the latest mammoth fossil discovery on Santa Rosa Island. Every fossil tells a story and we’ll follow the Larramendy Mammoth from discovery to the laboratory.

February Birthstone: Amethyst
For individuals with February birthdays, the amethyst makes a perfect birthstone. This month is often cold, dark and short for many people around the world, so the amethyst—which is often associated with qualities of peace, courage and stability—is the right gem for individuals who need a little extra warmth and strength this time of year.

Our January 2019 Field Trip Report

We had a wonderful day at Refugio Beach on Saturday January 19. After 5 days of rain, it was a beautiful, sunny day in the mid 70’s. Members present were Chris Ward, Bob Knox, John Meredith, Joseph Kemme and Sierra Kemme. Sierra brought along a friend and the Kemme’s father was also there.

Everyone found whalebone along with a plethora of other rocks. The storms of a couple of days earlier really stirred up the rocks and presented a wonderful selection to comb thru. We will be planning a late spring return to Wrightwood, CA for actinolite and jaspers. Most Likely kid to late May. We will advise more details as we get closer to the date.
