The Del-Air Rockhounds Club was founded in 1954 with members mostly residing in the San Fernando Valley area of California. Our club is a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing knowledge of the lapidary arts and techniques, geology, mineralogy and related fields. We own our own lapidary equipment with members available to teach and demonstrate lapidary techniques to other members. Our members enjoy lapidary related programs, demonstrations, exhibitions, displays and lectures. We also take monthly field trips to our local deserts & mountains for exploration and the study and collection of lapidary and mineral specimens.

November 2026 Program: Lake Superior Agates

Presented by: Dick & Mary Pat Weber

This month geologist, Dick Weber, will take us on a journey to the upper Midwest to look at Lake Superior agates. He will show us how they formed, where they are found, and the traditions relating to their care and display. Dick has been an avid “Lakers” fan as far back as he can remember. He began collecting these beautiful agates during his youth, long before he became interested in Geology as a profession. Lake Superior Agates are the second oldest and one of the most abundant types of agates found in the world.  Collectors around the world instantly recognize them because of their distinct fortification banding and rich iron oxide colors.

Field Trip Report:
Lonely Butte/Boron, CA for Petrified Wood, Jasper Agate & More
Joe Mastro - Field Trip Chair

We went to Lonely Butte first, and you can see the buttes in the background of the photo we took. There's someone holding a rock they found there. Then we went on to Boron. Everyone found some nice stuff there; chalcedonies, bloodstone and multicolored agates. We ended our day at the boron Borax mine visitor center. We got some really nice examples of Ulexite. The biggest I've seen. Everyone had a great time.

Shop Day Report:
September 19, 2026

September shop day was a great day for the members who made it. All the equipment was working, thanks to Jeff and Joe. We had people cutting, polishing, cabbing and just looking at pretty rock. Jeff, Joe, Bob K, Dan D, Paige, Dan F, Debbie, Bob D, Kyle and Trevor all had a great day and you could have too. Maybe next Shop Day?

2027 Club Dues Coming Due:

It's time to start thinking about your 2027 club dues. Dues are due by December 31, 2026 for calendar year 2027. Dues remain $26 for adults, $10 for juniors under 18 with a paid adult and $13 for associates. Please plan on paying these at the November 2026 meeting or, at the very latest, the January, 2027 meeting. Please do not bring membership dues to the December meeting as this is our annual Holiday Party and there is too much going on to have to deal with collecting dues payments at that time. We thank you in advance for paying your dues in a timely manner.

Educational Booth and Vendor Booth Reports:

On October 15th we were at one of our favorite schools with our educational booth. We
were there for 2 hours and had at least 50 children playing our free game (that’s a
player every 2.4 minutes) and then they and their parents were asking questions about
our Ice Age Fossil display. We were really busy and it kept our 6 members - Jeff
Dengrove, Shellie VanWinkle, Bernadette Friedman , Bob Knox and Bob & Maxine
Dearborn hopping. A fun evening.

On October 16th (the very next morning) saw us at a rock show booth. Here we were trying
to sell many rocks and items donated to our club through the years. Jeff Dengrove,
Bob Knox, Dan Farber, Shellie VanWinkle and Bob & Maxine Dearborn set up a very
early booth and waited for the crowd to come. The Kalma family had a booth next to us
and helped a lot, when needed. We didn’t see the huge crowd, but we did see club
members Joe Mastro, Dennis Miller, Anita Lichtman, Sandy Lee, Lisa Anne Cohen and
Paige Cohen who offered to help if needed. Thank you all. It was a nice warm,
and windless day and we saw a lot of other club friends.
