Sept 2014 Program:
The Pilbara Region of Western Australia
Presented By: Dick & Mary Pat Weber
The rocks of the Pilbara
region of Western Australia are among the oldest in the world, up to 3.48
billion years old. These rock formations took place when the earth’s atmosphere
contained little or no oxygen and long before plants and animals were found on
the earth. Due to these unique
conditions, many of these minerals are not seen anywhere else in the
world. Nearly every year a new discovery
is made in this desolate area of Australia. This month our speaker will be
retired geologist, Dick Weber, who traveled extensively through this region a
few years ago. On display will be many
examples of jaspers and ironstones, along with a specimen of the world’s oldest
agate? Emmy Silverman – Program Director

Our 2014 Holiday Charity
This year, The Del Air Rockhounds have
chosen “Operation Christmas Child”, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, as our
holiday charity. We ask all members, friends and guests to “Pack a Shoebox” for
an underprivileged child this Christmas. Here’s how it works:
1.
Use an empty cardboard or plastic shoebox (average
size). You can wrap the box & lid separately, but wrapping is not required.
2.
Decide whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl,
and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Pick-up a label from club member Emmy
Silverman or download one from http://www.samaritanspurse.org.
Use the appropriate boy/girl label. Mark the correct age category and tape the
label to the top of your box.
3.
Fill with gifts. Fill the box with a variety of gifts that
will bring delight to a child. See below for gift ideas.
4.
Help cover shipping and other costs related to
delivering your shoeboxes to children overseas by donating $7 for each gift you
prepare. You can write a check to Samaritan’s Purse (note “OCC” on the memo
line) and place it in an envelope on top of the items inside your shoebox. If
you are preparing multiple gifts, please make one combined donation.
- Place a rubber band around each closed shoebox and bring it to our general meeting on Thursday November 6, 2014 and club member Emmy Silverman will deliver them to Samaritan’s Purse for delivery to children around the world.
Gift Ideas:
- Toys: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as dolls, toy cars, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc.
- School Supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
- Non-Liquid Hygiene Items: toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, washcloths, etc.
- Accessories: t-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries), etc.
- A Personal Note: You may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. If you include your name and address, the child may be able to write back.
