Bob & Maxine Dearborn have driven to Alaska many times and along the way they have picked up a few rocks. They will show some of the areas where they have collected on the way north. We will go to sites in Washington, British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska. Some of the material we will be looking for is Petrified Wood, Copper Ore, Fossil Plants, Jade and more. Report on the Granada Hills Street Fair:

We had a wonderful day at the Granada Hills Street Faire on Saturday October 11, 2014. Jim & Shellie VanWinkle and Chris Ward and Bob Knox showed up bright and early at 9:00 am to set up our booth. We only had a 10 foot by 10 foot space this time but you would have been surprised at how much interesting stuff we were able to display. We had our spin-a-wheel and grab bags going for a dollar a spin and a dollar a bag. We also set up a touch and feel fossil display and invited our guests to try to guess what each specimen was. We had a large collection of California rocks, mineral and fossils set up to help educate the folks on our geology. The Faire started at 10:00 am. The spin-a-wheel started spinning immediately and barely stopped for a second the entire day. Julie and Oscar Marin showed up about 10:00 am and stayed the entire day. Member Hiro Matsuo also showed up around 1:00 pm to help out. Shellie and Julie ran the spin-a-wheel the entire day. Jim, Oscar, Bob & Chris sold grab bags, educated people on our fossil display and talked rocks to a seemingly endless flow of people. Shellie had to leave about 2:30 pm due to a prior engagement but Jim came back around 4:30 and stayed to help break down the booth when the Faire closed at 5:00 pm. We sold almost every prize and grab bag we had. We talked to hundreds and hundreds of people of all ages and were 3 to 4 people deep at our booth the whole day. We passed out over a hundred club flyers and had a fantastic time the whole day.

Our Holiday Party theme this year is:
“Under the Sea”

We will be decorating our tables with sea fossils, sea corals and sea animals of all kinds, shapes and colors. We ask those members that will be attending the party to please bring something in from your own collections that can be added to the table runners and help complete the look. It could be a fossil shark tooth, a fossilized coral, a trilobite or ammonite. Anything from the sea will do.
