March 2017 Program
FLUORITE -THE WORLD'S MOST COLORFUL
MINERAL
Presented by: Dick Weber
This month Dick Weber will introduce us to the colorful
world of Fluorite. Due to a spectacular range of colors and well developed
crystals, this mineral is highly sought after by collectors. Clear and colorless when pure, fluorite can
exhibit every color of the spectrum from the deepest purple to bright oranges
and reds. In addition to its aesthetic
and scientific value, fluorite is a critical industrial mineral used in the
production of thousands of commercial products. Dick Weber was first exposed to the fluorite
deposits of the Mississippi Valley while working on his geology degree.
Actively collecting specimens for the last 15 years, he will bring a display
showcasing pieces from famous locales.

Handy Hints and Other Tidbits
Gold Fill: a layer of gold backed with another metal.
Gold Plate: placing a base metal, as copper, in a bath
and sealing through electroplate.
Gold Leaf: a sheeting of gold varying from 4-5
millionths of an inch.
Yellow Gold: a jewelry metal, 53% gold, 25% silver and 22%
copper.
Liquid Gold: finely divided gold in vegetable oil for
gilding ceramics.
24 karat Gold: Pure gold.
A karat is a unit used to
give the percent of gold in a gold alloy. One karat = 1/24 gold
An interesting note: A single ounce of gold can be stretched into
a wire 50 miles long!
CARE FOR YOUR TOOLS:
Tools won’t rust if you spray them with PAM or WD-40 then wipe with a dry
cloth.
FLAT LAPPING TIP:
After lapping flat stones, such as cut thundereggs, with 600 grit, wash them and
leave under a heat lamp or 100-watt bulb for about 15 minutes. When the stones are warm, polish them on a
felt wheel with tin oxide. By
pre-heating, the polishing is almost instant. Otherwise, the felt wheel has to
heat the stone before the polishing begins.
NOW SOME FUN:
TRUE WISDOM IS KNOWING WHEN TO SPEAK YOUR MIND AND WHEN TO MIND YOUR SPEECH!

“Behind the Scenes”
The Del-Air Board of Directors would like to recognize and thank the
“behind the scenes” efforts put forth by members Michael Tschacher, Jeff Dengrove and Bob Backus for their diligent efforts in supplying our
education outreach team with a countless amount of tumbled & polished
stones that our team distributes to each and every one of the 2nd, 4th
and 5th grade students at the many, many schools they visited this
season. You are our true “Rock Stars” and your efforts are greatly appreciated.
