Jan 2016 Program: “Micro Minerals of the Santa Monica Mountains”
 Presented by: Robert Housley
Robert Housley, a Research Associate at both Caltech and the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, who organized the Pacific Micromount Conference for many years, will be speaking on micro minerals of the Santa Monica Mountains. The Santa Monica Mountains are well known for fine agate, petrified wood, marine fossils and zeolites. Lesser known are the many micro minerals that also occur there. Robert will describe many of these and illustrate them with optical and SEM images. Minerals mentioned will include dravite tourmaline, garnet, epidote, tridymite, cristobalite, azurite, malachite, wulfenite, galena, & sphalerite. Robert has his own micro mineral named after him that is called “Housleyite”. Robert will also give GPS coordinates for everyone to explore the micro minerals in the Santa Monica Mountains.

January 2016 Field Trip:
Refugio Beach for Whale Bone
Saturday January 23, 2016 @ 12:00 pm
It's time again for the annual Del Air Fossil Whale Bone Hunt. This is always a fun trip. Low tide is at approximately 12:00 pm so we will meet at Refugio Beach at around noon. Dress in layers as the weather this time of year can vary from cold and cloudy to sunny and warm. Bring buckets or canvas bags to carry home your treasures. There’s no open stores nearby for food and water so while you’re at it, why not pack yourselves a picnic lunch to eat on the beach when you are done searching. Take US Hwy 101 Ventura Freeway approximately 100 miles to Refugio Beach Rd exit.
